Internal model control (IMC)
A model-based tuning framework that reduces the whole design to one knob — the chosen closed-loop time constant.
What it means
Internal model control derives the controller from a process model plus a chosen closed-loop time constant. A single filter time constant, called lambda in the tuning literature, sets how fast the loop is asked to be.
The advantage is that the three controller terms stop being three independent guesses. Choose the closed-loop speed and the method hands you the rest, and the stability margin changes predictably as lambda is pushed down.
Lambda tuning is IMC applied to an FOPDT model, which is why the two names travel together. The price is the model itself: IMC running on a poor FOPDT is a confident method wrapped around a fiction.
