Lambda tuning

A tuning method that sets the closed-loop response time to a chosen value rather than maximising speed.

What it means

Lambda tuning picks a target closed-loop time constant — lambda — and derives the tuning from the process model to achieve it. The engineer chooses how fast the loop should be rather than pushing it as fast as it will go.

Its appeal on operating plants is robustness and predictability: a lambda-tuned loop has a known response and a comfortable stability margin, and loops tuned this way interact less with each other. It requires a process model, which is why it is a commissioning and study method rather than something to do from a trend screen.
